Ganduje To Introduce BRT Busses In Kano

Kano state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a Chinese transportation company with a view to introducing a multi-billion naira Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, service in the state’s metropolis.

A statement signed by the Director – General, Media and Publicity, of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, at first, about 100 busses would be supplied to the state for the services.

According to the statement, the MOU was signed by the Kano state government, Kano Metropolitan Transport Company, Zhengzhou Yutong Bus Company, China and Zhengzhou Public Bus Communication Co. Ltd., China.

The MOU further entails integrated transport solutions that includes routes network and infrastructure planning, suitable bus models, Intelligent Transport System, ITS, modern management of operation and maintenance of the fleet data analysis systems, regulation improvement and local talent improvement.

The statement also quoted Governor Ganduje as saying that the initiative was aimed at revolutionising transport and enhancing ease of doing business in Nigeria’s foremost commercial center.

“Presently, Kano is the most populous state in the country. It has a population of over 16 million people. The main public vehicles are mini buses and tricycles which are not supportive of long – term mega city development.

“Therefore, an efficient modern system of public transportation must be established. This will reflect the position of Kano as a truly megacity,” Mr Ganduje who was represented by the State commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, Aminu Wudil, stated.

“We decided to partner with Zhengzhou Yutong because it is the world’s largest and reputed bus manufacturer with capacity providing Integrated Solution of Public bus transport system and several decades of experience.

“Kano state government is expected to invest not more than 25 percent of the project cost while the operator, Kano Metropolitan Transport Company is the main shareholder while the Chinese company will serve as the technical partner.”

I Didnt Tell Yahaya Bello To Defect To Accord Party – Gov Ortom

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has bruised aside allegation that he had instructed his Kogi State counterpart, Governor Yahaya Bello to dump the All Progressive Congress (APC) and pitch tent in the Accord Party (AP).

Governor Ortom who made the denial during an interaction with journalists at the government house, also ruled out insinuation that he was plotting to dump the PDP back to the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC after winning his second term on the platform of the PDP.

The governor said he is not in speaking terms with Governor Bello and has nothing to do with Kogi politics as the problems confronting his administration were enough challenges for him to handle.

“I did not instruct the Governor of Kogi State to defect from APC to Accord Party. I have nothing to do with Kogi politics, the problems I am facing here in Benue are enough for me. Even on the issue of open grazing law, I have never asked other states to emulate Benue”.

He likened the allegation of his defection to the APC to going back to eat his vomit.

“I cannot go back to my vomit, PDP is my real home, PDP is my party. I supported the party to where it is today”.

“In PDP, I was its National Auditor, I was Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, I was also Supervising Minister of Aviation, I won my second term on the platform of the PDP and so there is no basis whatsoever saying that I am planning to defect to APC again”.

“I have been fully integrated into the PDP now and I believe that is the handiwork of the APC”, said Governor Ortom.

Throwback 1966 Lt Col Gowon & Awolowo Immediately He Was Released From Prison

Lt. Col Murtala Muhammed, Lt. Col Yakubu Gowon (new Head of State), and Obafemi Awolowo after Gowon's regime released Awolowo from Calabar Prison in August 1966.

Background: Obafemi Awolowo was convicted for treason and jailed (in 1964) for conspiring with the Kwame Nkrumah government to overthrow the Nigerian government under Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa.

On January 15, 1966 some young officers fronted by Maj. Patrick Chukwuma Nzeogwu cut the head of PM Balewa's government figuratively in that Balewa and other regional Premiers (except Michael Oparah, the Eastern Premier and Dennis Osadebay, Mid Western Premier) were murdered in the violent coup.

Nzeogwu's coup was immediately put down by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Nigerian Army, Maj-Gen JTU Ironsi, who then seized control of the Nigerian government.

Many young northern officers felt some type of way that mostly northern politicians and officers were killed in the January coup by the officers who took out Balewa's government, so these northern officers retaliated in July 1966 brutally taking out Maj-Gen Ironsi. Many Igbo officers and NCOs were also massacred by mutineering NCOs from the north across Nigeria in July 1966. The roving spirit and mastermind of the July Coup was Murtala Muhammed. Muhammed and his co-conspirators were prepared to cut off northern Nigeria from the Nigerian federation and were dissuaded by more mature minds and diplomats. Muhammed and his conspirators agreed to have Col. Yakubu Gowon as the new Head of State so Murtala Muhammed was always lurking over Gowon's shoulders and this picture is poetic in that regard.

Almost 10 years after this picture was taken, Gowon was overthrown (i.e. July 1975) and Murtala served for a short time as Nigeria's Head of State before he was assassinated in February 1976 by conspirators led by another participant in the July 1966 coup - Buka Suka Dimka.

So went the interesting "Game of Thrones" Nigeria military style. In fact the Class of July 1966 (TY Danjuma, Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Babangida Joseph Garba, John Shagaya, Gado Nasko, Sanni Abacha et al) would go on to dominate Nigerian politics for many decades.
